Expert opinion
: The Abbey long branch hackamore consists of a steering ring, extended by two rods to which the reins are attached. A hackamore is used on opposite reins (support reins). It has a very powerful leverage effect: its severity comes from the support on the fragile bones of the muzzle, and under the lower jaw, of a more or less severe curb chain (made of leather, rubber, metal chain...) which tightens this sensitive part of the horse's head. The noseband must be adjusted so that it rests on the bony part of the nose, and not on the soft cartilage. It is now used in show jumping, sometimes in combination with a single bit in order to combine the two actions. In any case, it requires a light and experienced hand.
