The three-rings bit, as the name suggests, usually has three rings (previously four). The central ring, where the mouthpiece is positioned, is the largest. Its lowering/raising effect helps to shift the weight backward. It belongs to the same family as the gag bit, but its leverage is harder due to the length of its shanks.

The adjustments are multiple:

- You can attach the reins directly to the lower ring, where the leverage effect is the strongest.

- You can attach straps to both the middle and lower rings, which divides the leverage effect and makes it gentler.

- You can use this bit with two pairs of reins, allowing you to adjust the action and leverage strength accordingly.

Yes, this recent practice has been adopted. Some brands like Bombers makes their three-rings bits with a nylon curb chain. This allows for less direct action on the neck but distributes pressure more evenly on the jaw. However, the effect remains stronger in this case.

Do you know the funnel approach ? That's how we usually work to determine the most suitable bit. You need to be attentive to the various signals your horse might emit, which could help determine his sensitivities. Does he shake his head? Does he rest on his bit? The bit should be rinsed with water after each use to remove saliva and residues. Don't forget to dry it with a towel. If impurities are difficult to remove, you can use a small cleaning brush. Never use a metallic brush, however, as the bristles may scratch the bit, making it uneven and sharp.
