The Kimblewich bit, or Spanish bit, is most often used in Iberian riding. It has a more or less strong action. It can be used with or without a curb chain and applies pressure on the bars with a leverage effect. It is primarily recommended for horses with a lot of natural impulsion.

The Kimblewich bit can be used in three ways:

- Soft: with the reins attached to the upper notch, it is halfway between the effect of an eggbutt bit and a full-cheek bit.

- Medium: with the reins in the middle notch, where the leverage action is less significant than if the reins are placed in the lower notch.

- Severe: with the reins in the lower notch, where the leverage action is more pronounced.

They are cousins, but the Kimblewich often has larger rings, making its leverage more substantial.

It is possible to use a Kimblewich bit without a curb chain, but in this case, its action is closer to that of a full-cheek bit.

The Kimblewich bit should be rinsed with water after each use to remove saliva and residues. Don't forget to dry it with a towel. If impurities are difficult to remove, you can use a small cleaning brush. Never use a metallic brush, however, as the bristles may scratch the bit, making it uneven and sharp.
