Our expert's opinion
The Trust Waterford eggbutt gag bit features a sweet iron mouthpiece made up of multiple rounded links with four joints. Its highly flexible design provides independent, asymmetrical contact between the rider's hands and the horse's mouth.
This bit is particularly recommended for horses that tend to lean excessively on the rider's hands. The multiple joints encourage the horse to become more self-supporting through the forehand rather than relying on the bit for balance.
The combination of the Waterford mouthpiece and eggbutt rings makes this bit particularly suitable for horses that are heavy in the contact but have sensitive corners of the mouth.
The gag bit helps encourage collection, improving and maintaining the horse's balance. It encourages the horse to lift its withers and engage its hindquarters underneath its body.
This bit features special cheekpieces that pass through two additional rings positioned perpendicular to the main bit rings. This design allows it to be used with two or four reins, or with gag bit converters.
When used with four reins, the reins attached directly to the bit rings provide a traditional lifting action, while those attached to the sliding gag cheekpieces can produce a lowering effect on the horse's head and neck.
The gag bit can help improve the horse's balance by encouraging the horse to bring its nose closer to the rider.
Material
Sweet iron : Sweet iron alloy oxidizes when in contact with the humidity of the mouth and the air. The oxidation brings a sweet taste which naturally stimulates the production of saliva. This corresponds to the effect of a sugar that is given to the horse at the beginning of the session but allows to diffuse this sweet taste throughout the work. Consequently, this alloy allows a good acceptance of the bit and helps the horse to get in touch with its mouthpiece. The oxydation modifies the aspect of the bit during the sessions.
