Our expert's opinion
The Pelham cheeks provide a more framing action and, depending on the rein arrangement, leverage to refine the rider's aids. The straight mouthpiece with tongue port provides continuous support while creating additional room in the centre of the tongue: the Soft version offers greater cushioning of the rein aids and follows the mouth more easily, while the Hard version provides increased stability and precision. The resin coating creates a softer contact than metal and can encourage acceptance in sensitive horses, while the choice between Soft and Hard allows the balance between comfort, stability, tension and precision of the contact to be adjusted.
Description
The Velari Pelham Flex with Tongue Port bit is designed for sensitive horses that benefit from a comfortable contact while requiring the additional framing of a Pelham. Its straight mouthpiece features a tongue port that provides additional room for the tongue and reduces pressure on its centre.
The mouthpiece is available in two levels of flexibility: Soft or Hard. The Soft version follows the movements of the mouth more easily and provides greater cushioning of the rider's rein aids, while the Hard version offers more support and stability. This allows the level of flexibility to be adapted to the horse's sensitivity and the type of contact required.
The synthetic resin coating provides a softer contact than metal and can be particularly suitable for sensitive horses or those reluctant to accept metal mouthpieces. It maintains a comfortable contact while benefiting from the additional tongue room provided by the port.
The Pelham cheeks provide a more framing action and, depending on the rein arrangement, leverage. They offer greater possibilities for managing contact and control than a standard snaffle.
Material
Different types of resin are available, with varying degrees of softness and smoothness. The material used is generally food-grade resin. Resin provides a softer contact that can encourage relaxation. It remains at an ambient temperature and offers a gentle contact while being less soft and bulky than rubber. It is an excellent material for helping sensitive horses gain confidence in the contact.
Attention: This material is vulnerable and is not guaranteed by the manufacturer against wear caused by biting. It is strongly recommended not to use a bit that is excessively damaged, as it could injure the horse's bars, tongue or palate.
