Its double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure across the tongue and bars while reducing the nutcracker effect associated with single-jointed bits. Its flexibility encourages jaw relaxation and allows progressive communication through the reins.

The Pessoa rings allow the intensity of the action to be adjusted according to rein attachment. Their leverage applies pressure to the poll and encourages a lowering action. The reins can be attached directly to the lower ring or used with roundings connecting the middle and lower rings.
