Our expert's opinion
The Trust Segundo double-jointed tandem bit combines the leverage action of its short or long shanks with a jointed mouthpiece that provides precise rein communication through pressure on the tongue and bars. Its double-jointed design retains some mobility in the mouth, while the Segundo profile offers an alternative contact for horses requiring additional guidance. Sweet Iron encourages chewing and salivation, potentially improving bit acceptance and relaxation. The combined action on the nose, mouth and lower jaw helps manage strong horses, but requires experienced hands and careful curb chain adjustment to control the pressure applied.
Description
The Trust Segundo double-jointed tandem bit is designed for strong or energetic horses requiring additional control and guidance. It combines the action of a jointed bit with that of a hackamore, applying pressure to several areas of the horse's head.
Its Segundo double-jointed mouthpiece transmits rein aids through two joints. This configuration provides some mobility in the mouth while allowing precise action on the tongue and bars.
Sweet Iron naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture, developing a distinctive taste that encourages chewing and salivation. This material may promote bit acceptance and relaxation of the mouth.
The tandem combines pressure on the nose, mouth and lower jaw through its shanks and curb chain. Available with short or long shanks, it allows the leverage effect to be adjusted, while the curb chain setting influences the intensity of the pressure applied.
This bit requires precise handling to maintain consistent contact without creating excessive tension. A curb chain cover may be used to improve comfort for sensitive horses.
Material
Sweet Iron: Sweet Iron is an alloy that naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture in the horse's mouth and air. This oxidation develops a slightly sweet taste that encourages chewing and saliva production. It can therefore promote bit acceptance, relaxation of the mouth and more consistent contact. Oxidation gradually changes the appearance of the mouthpiece, which is a normal characteristic of this material.
