Our expert's opinion
The Pelham sidepieces provide progressive leverage for greater stability, improved control and a more framed outline. The double-jointed mouthpiece with a small tongue relief and smooth joints distributes pressure evenly without pressing on the palate or bars, creating a precise yet comfortable contact. The Sweet Iron coating encourages salivation and promotes a steadier connection, making this bit an excellent option for strong yet sensitive horses that need more confidence in the contact.
Description
The Fager Marcus Pelham bit is designed for strong yet sensitive horses that lean on the contact while overreacting to increased rein pressure. It is also suitable for horses needing greater stability and those that tend to carry their neck too high.
The double-jointed mouthpiece with a small tongue relief distributes pressure evenly while giving the tongue more space. Its perfectly smooth joints prevent pressure against the palate or the bars, providing exceptional comfort for sensitive mouths.
The Sweet Iron coating encourages salivation thanks to its naturally sweet taste, helping the horse seek a softer, steadier connection with the rider's hand.
The longer Pelham shanks create more leverage than a Baby Pelham, offering greater stability, improved braking and encouraging a lower, more relaxed neck position while remaining adjustable when ridden with two reins or Pelham roundings.
The small tongue relief combined with the carefully designed thickness improves comfort for horses with sensitive tongues that tend to open the mouth or move the tongue, while maintaining a precise action when rein aids are applied.
Material
Sweet Iron is a coating applied over a stainless steel core. When exposed to moisture, it naturally oxidises, creating a slightly sweet taste that stimulates salivation and encourages the horse to maintain a softer, steadier contact with the bit. The brownish-grey oxidation is completely normal and expected.
