Our expert's opinion
The Baby Pelham cheekpieces provide progressive leverage, improving stability and allowing the rider to fine-tune the amount of control depending on the rein setup. The anatomical straight mouthpiece with a generous tongue port distributes pressure evenly while relieving the tongue, creating a steady and comfortable contact for sensitive horses. The Sweet Iron coating naturally stimulates salivation, encouraging the horse to seek the contact and improving overall acceptance of the bit.
Description
The Fager Simon Baby Pelham is designed for sensitive yet strong horses that struggle with a consistent contact, tend to raise the neck, open the mouth, or pull on the reins. It promotes a steadier connection while improving overall balance.
Its anatomical straight mouthpiece follows the natural shape of the horse's mouth to distribute pressure evenly. The generous tongue port reduces pressure on a large or sensitive tongue, providing greater comfort and encouraging the horse to confidently accept the contact.
The Sweet Iron coating gradually develops a natural oxidation that creates a pleasant sweet taste. This stimulates salivation and encourages the horse to seek and maintain a softer contact with the bit.
The Baby Pelham cheekpieces provide adjustable leverage depending on whether two reins or pelham roundings are used. They offer additional control and stability while maintaining a progressive action that can be adapted to the rider's needs.
Horses that are particularly wide across the premolars may require one size larger to ensure the upper shanks fit comfortably.
Material
Sweet Iron is a coating applied over a stainless steel bit. It gradually oxidises to create a pleasant sweet taste that masks the metallic flavour of stainless steel. This natural reaction encourages salivation and helps the horse seek a steadier contact with the bit. As the bit is used, the coating develops a brownish-grey colour, which is completely normal.
