Our expert's opinion
The loose rings promote a softer, more mobile contact, while the double-jointed Front Lock mouthpiece allows the rider to adjust the level of stability. Used with the forward lock, it provides the feel of a straight bar for horses needing greater support in the contact; reversed, it works like a traditional double-jointed bit while preventing horses from drawing the bit back to chew on it. The small tongue relief improves comfort for sensitive horses, and the Sweet Iron coating stimulates salivation to encourage a more consistent acceptance of the contact.
Description
The Fager Hugo Loose Ring is designed for horses that struggle with an inconsistent contact, hesitate to seek the rider's hand, or have a sensitive mouth. Its reversible design allows the rider to choose between two different mouthpiece actions depending on the horse's needs.
The double-jointed mouthpiece features the Front Lock system and can be fitted in two directions. In its standard position, it gradually locks under rein pressure to provide the stability of a straight bar while retaining the flexibility of a jointed bit. Reversed, it works as a traditional double-jointed bit without forward locking while preventing the horse from drawing the bit back to chew on it.
The small tongue relief reduces pressure over the centre of the tongue, making it suitable for sensitive horses that open their mouths, move their tongue excessively or pull on the reins. The Sweet Iron coating promotes salivation and encourages the horse to confidently seek the contact.
The loose rings allow the mouthpiece to move independently, giving the horse greater freedom to position the bit comfortably in the mouth. This mobility promotes relaxation and a softer connection.
Its relatively slim mouthpiece provides precise communication while maintaining excellent pressure distribution thanks to the progressive locking system.
Material
The mouthpiece features a stainless steel core coated with Sweet Iron. When exposed to moisture and air, the Sweet Iron gradually oxidises, developing a brownish-grey surface with a naturally sweet taste. This normal process stimulates salivation, encouraging the horse to accept the bit more readily and seek a steadier contact.
