Our expert's opinion
The Waterford Cable Loose Ring bit offers precise, responsive action while allowing an immediate return to a neutral position as soon as the reins are released. The loose rings enable instant relief from tongue and bar pressure, promoting clear communication and a softer, more responsive contact.
The Waterford Cable mouthpiece is made up of several smooth, flexible rounded components that distribute pressure evenly across the mouth. Its high level of flexibility discourages leaning, encourages mouthing, and stimulates salivation. The natural spring-back action of the cable provides positive feedback and ensures a quick return to balance, making it difficult for the horse to take a strong hold.
This cheekpiece, preferred by Bomber, is available in three sizes: large, standard, and a slightly smaller version for ponies. The use of a bit strap with loose rings is strongly recommended to improve stability and minimize the mouthpiece sliding through the mouth. Bit rubbers can also be considered as a preventative measure.
The Waterford is typically worn 5–10 mm (¼”–½”) longer than a traditional mouthpiece to allow it to curve correctly around the tongue and maximize its effect. An alternative option is the Waterford Barrel Cable, which features cylindrical components that increase the surface area of the pressure points for a slightly different feel.
Material
Sweet Iron : Sweet Iron alloy oxidizes upon contact with moisture in the mouth and air. The oxidation brings a sweet taste that naturally stimulates the production of saliva. This corresponds to the effect of a sugar that is given to the horse at the beginning of the session but allows to diffuse this sweet taste throughout the work. Therefore, this alloy allows a good acceptance of the bit and helps the horse to make contact with the mouthpiece. The oxidation modifies the aspect of the bit during the sessions.
Caution : The central material (cable) is vulnerable and is not guaranteed by the manufacturer against wear and tear due to biting. We strongly advise against using a bit that is too damaged, as this could injure the horse's bars, tongue and palate.
