This mouthpiece has a small tongue relief to be more gentle to the tongue. The small tongue relief, combined with the gentle material, makes this bit a suitable option for horses with a sensitive tongue who can open their mouth, pull the reins, and move the tongue freely.

The pelham is a fixed lever bit. Through its action on the horse's neck and chin (mandible), it has a lowering effect that varies in intensity depending on the size of the shanks and how it is fitted (two or four rein adjustment, curb chains, curb chain). It is useful on powerful and/or relatively hot-blooded horses to channel their energy. The curb chain allows the intensity of the bit to be varied. It is advisable to use curb chain guards for sensitive horses.
