Our expert's opinion
The Trust locking single-jointed tandem bit combines the leverage action of its short or long shanks with a jointed mouthpiece that locks when rein tension increases. This mechanism reduces the nutcracker effect when locked and provides more stable pressure on the tongue and bars, potentially helping horses that tend to lean on the bit maintain lighter contact. Sweet Iron encourages chewing and salivation, supporting bit acceptance. The combined action on the nose, mouth and lower jaw provides additional control but requires experienced hands and careful curb chain adjustment to avoid excessive tension.
Description
The Trust locking single-jointed tandem bit is designed for strong or energetic horses requiring additional control while maintaining light, consistent contact.
Its single-jointed mouthpiece features a locking mechanism that restricts articulation when rein tension increases. It changes from a jointed action to a more stable, direct contact, distributing pressure more evenly across the tongue and bars. This design provides a firmer response when the horse leans on the bit.
Sweet Iron naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture, developing a distinctive taste that encourages chewing and salivation. This material may promote bit acceptance and relaxation of the mouth.
The tandem combines the action of a bit and a hackamore, applying pressure to the nose, mouth and lower jaw through the curb chain. Available with short or long shanks, it allows the leverage effect to be adapted, while curb chain adjustment influences the intensity of the action.
This bit requires precise rein aids and careful adjustment to avoid excessive pressure. A curb chain cover may improve comfort for sensitive horses.
This model runs small. Choosing one size larger than the horse's usual bit size is recommended.
Material
Sweet iron : Sweet iron alloy oxidizes when in contact with the humidity of the mouth and the air. The oxidation brings a sweet taste which naturally stimulates the production of saliva. This corresponds to the effect of a sugar that is given to the horse at the beginning of the session but allows to diffuse this sweet taste throughout the work. Consequently, this alloy allows a good acceptance of the bit and helps the horse to get in touch with its mouthpiece. The oxydation modifies the aspect of the bit during the sessions.
