: The Vulcanite pelham bit from Abbey is a single-curvature bit with a soft contact thanks to its alloy. Unlike the double curb bit, which acts on the tongue, the single curb bit acts on the palate and sides of the tongue. It's important to remember that a horse's palate is a sensitive area that must not be neglected. It may be recommended for horses that are relatively easy to handle but have little mouthfeel, are not very sensitive to the palate or have a hollow palate.  All these elements will enable the horse to gain confidence in its mouthpiece, to come to rest and to tense up. This bit resembles the bridle bit, but has a large ring in the barrel, enabling a second pair of reins or rings to be attached. Its leverage can vary according to the size of the prongs, the position of the reins and the setting of the curb chain. The curb chain allows you to vary the intensity of the bit. We recommend the use of curb chain protectors for sensitive horses. The Pelham closes the head-neck angle and is ideal for strong horses that can be opened on the hand.
