Our expert's opinion
The Trust locking single-jointed pelham combines the leverage action of short or long shanks with a jointed mouthpiece that becomes rigid under rein contact. Short shanks provide a more direct response, while long shanks increase leverage on the poll and chin. The locking mechanism limits the closing action of the single joint and reduces the nutcracker effect, while distributing pressure more directly across the tongue and bars. Sweet Iron encourages chewing and salivation, which may improve bit acceptance and relaxation. This combination can suit horses that tend to lean on the rider's hands, but requires controlled rein tension to maintain comfortable contact.
Description
The Trust locking single-jointed pelham bit is designed for strong horses or those that tend to lean on the rider's hands. Available with short or long shanks, it combines a locking mouthpiece with adjustable leverage to encourage lighter and more precise contact.
Its single-jointed mouthpiece features a locking mechanism that limits articulation when rein contact is applied. The mouthpiece then becomes more stable and transmits aids more directly, reducing the nutcracker effect and the risk of tongue pinching caused by the joint closing.
Sweet Iron naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture, developing a distinctive taste that encourages chewing and salivation. This material may promote relaxation and improve bit acceptance.
The pelham applies leverage pressure to the poll and chin through the curb chain. Short shanks provide a more direct action, while long shanks increase leverage. The intensity also depends on the curb chain adjustment and whether pelham roundings or two sets of reins are used.
This bit combines the mobility of a single-jointed mouthpiece at rest with a firmer action when the joint locks. Supplied with a curb chain.
Material
Sweet Iron: Sweet Iron is an alloy that naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture in the horse's mouth and air. This oxidation develops a slightly sweet taste that encourages chewing and saliva production. It can therefore promote bit acceptance, relaxation of the mouth and more consistent contact. Oxidation gradually changes the appearance of the mouthpiece, which is a normal characteristic of this material.
