Expert opinion
: The Waterford bit is a fully articulated bit. These multiple breaks avoid giving stability in the horse's mouth which allows horses that can weigh in the hand or lean on more traditional bits to take charge and lighten the contact in the hand. The free rings offer a soft contact to the mouth. They allow a slight indirect contact compared to fixed rings, which makes it easier to play in the fingers and limits excessive tension.
Material
Sweet Iron : Sweet Iron alloy oxidizes upon contact with moisture in the mouth and air. The oxidation brings a sweet taste that naturally stimulates the production of saliva. This corresponds to the effect of a sugar that is given to the horse at the beginning of the session but allows to diffuse this sweet taste throughout the work. Therefore, this alloy allows a good acceptance of the bit and helps the horse to make contact with the mouthpiece. The oxydation modifies the aspect of the bit during the sessions.
