Expert's opinion: The hackamore consists of a steering ring, extended by two rods to the end of which the reins are attached. A hackamore is used with opposite reins (supporting reins). It has a very powerful leverage effect: its severity comes from the support on the fragile bones of the muzzle, and under the lower jaw, of a more or less 'hard' curb chain (made of leather or metal chain) which grips this sensitive part of the horse's head. It is now used in show jumping, sometimes as a double bit to combine the two actions. In all cases, it requires a light, experienced hand. The leather part on the muzzle is removable for greater or lesser hardness.
