Our expert's opinion
The Trust French Link tandem combines the leverage action of its shanks with pressure distributed across the nose, mouth and lower jaw. Its double-jointed mouthpiece with a flattened central plate reduces the nutcracker effect and encourages mouthpiece mobility, which may improve relaxation in horses that tend to lean on the bit. Sweet Iron promotes chewing and salivation, supporting bit acceptance and consistent contact. This combination can be useful for strong horses requiring additional control, but demands experienced hands and precise curb chain adjustment to manage the pressure applied.
Description
The Trust French Link double-jointed tandem bit is designed for strong or energetic horses requiring additional control. It combines the action of a jointed bit with that of a hackamore for precise communication.
Its double-jointed mouthpiece features a slightly flattened central plate that rests on the tongue and reduces the nutcracker effect. The consistent thickness of the joints helps prevent uneven surfaces that could cause discomfort. Its mobility encourages relaxation, particularly in horses that tend to lean on straight mouthpieces.
Sweet Iron naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture, developing a distinctive taste that encourages chewing and salivation. This material may promote bit acceptance and more consistent contact.
The tandem combines pressure on the nose, mouth and lower jaw through the curb chain. Its leverage action requires precise handling, particularly with horses sensitive to pressure. The curb chain adjustment allows the intensity of the action to be regulated.
Available with short or long shanks, this bit runs small. Choosing one size larger than the horse's usual bit size is recommended.
Material
Sweet Iron: Sweet Iron is an alloy that naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture in the horse's mouth and air. This oxidation develops a slightly sweet taste that encourages chewing and saliva production. It can therefore promote bit acceptance, relaxation of the mouth and more consistent contact. Oxidation gradually changes the appearance of the mouthpiece, which is a normal characteristic of this material.
