Expert opinion
: This bit is very similar to the bridle bit. However, it can have a broken barrel, and still has a large ring in the barrel, which allows a second pair of reins or a pair of rings to be attached. The functioning of the pelham and its severity depend essentially on the point of attachment of the reins. When used on the top ring, the pelham is slightly lifting. This bit is a little more powerful than a snaffle. When used on the lower ring, the pelham is lowering. In this use, the pelham is a powerful bit. The straight bit with tongue passage allows a well distributed pressure. Its anatomical shape allows to create a targeted pressure on the whole tongue during an action.
