Our expert's opinion
The Pelham cheeks provide leverage that can offer additional control for strong horses or those that tend to raise their head, with the intensity adjusted through rein placement and curb chain setting. The rigid, curved straight mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly and avoids the pinching associated with jointed mouthpieces, encouraging a more symmetrical and stable contact. Rubber provides a less cold feel than metal and may be better accepted by some sensitive horses, while the rigidity of this mouthpiece maintains clear and precise aids.
Description
The Abbey rigid curved straight mouth Pelham bit is particularly suited to strong or sensitive horses, as well as horses that tend to evade the contact or lack stability in the connection. Its action provides additional control while retaining a comfortable mouthpiece.
The rigid straight mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly across the tongue and bars. Its curved shape provides additional room for the tongue, while the absence of joints eliminates pinching and creates symmetrical contact on both sides of the mouth.
The rubber mouthpiece provides a less cold contact than metal and can encourage acceptance in sensitive horses. Its rigidity nevertheless maintains clear and stable aids.
The Pelham cheeks create leverage, the intensity of which varies according to the length of the shanks, rein attachment and curb chain adjustment. The large ring positioned level with the mouthpiece allows the bit to be used with two reins or with Pelham roundings.
The thickness of the mouthpiece distributes pressure over a wider surface in the mouth. The combination of the curved straight mouthpiece and Pelham action can help horses that tend to raise their head or evade the contact find a more stable connection.
Material
Vulcanite : Vulcanite is a hard material obtained from the vulcanisation of rubber, a process in which rubber is heated to a high temperature to make it harder and smoother. Soft to the touch and with a more stable temperature, this material is more comfortable than metal. This type of rubber requires the horse to salivate naturally with a bit in its mouth so that it does not overheat. Unlike ebonite, vulcanite is a smooth alloy.
Caution : This material is vulnerable and is not guaranteed by the manufacturer against wear and tear due to biting. We strongly advise against using a bit that is too damaged, as this could injure the horse's bars, tongue and palate.
