Our expert's opinion
The butterfly cheeks combine a framing effect that assists with steering with leverage whose intensity depends on the rein setting and curb chain adjustment. The straight mouthpiece distributes pressure over the tongue and bars and promotes symmetrical contact, while the stainless steel provides a stable and durable mouthpiece. This combination can provide greater precision and control for strong or forward-going ponies while maintaining consistent contact.
Description
The Zilco pony straight butterfly bit is particularly suited to ponies requiring additional guidance and control, especially those that are strong or forward-going.
Its straight mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars while relieving the palate. It provides a symmetrical action and may suit ponies with a sensitive or low palate.
Made from stainless steel, it provides a strong and durable mouthpiece suitable for regular use.
The butterfly cheeks, mainly used for driving but also suitable for ridden work, provide a more framing action to assist with steering. Depending on the rein setting and the use of the curb chain, they can also create leverage on the poll and chin.
This bit can be used with one or two pairs of reins, with or without roundings, allowing the action to be adjusted to the rider's hand and the pony's needs.
Material
Stainless steel: Stainless steel is a commonly used alloy that does not oxidise. Strong and durable, it withstands regular use well and requires little maintenance.
