Our expert's opinion
The Trust double-jointed Pelham combines the mobility of a jointed mouthpiece with the leverage action of short or long shanks. Short shanks provide a more direct action, while long shanks increase pressure on the poll and chin. The double-jointed mouthpiece, featuring a slightly flattened central lozenge, distributes pressure across the tongue and bars while reducing the nutcracker effect. Its mobility can encourage relaxation in horses that tend to lean on straight mouthpieces. Sweet Iron promotes chewing and salivation, which may improve bit acceptance and contact consistency. Correct curb chain adjustment remains essential to control the intensity of the aids.
Description
The Trust double-jointed Pelham bit is designed for horses requiring additional control while maintaining good mouthpiece mobility. Available with short or long shanks, it can suit strong horses or those that tend to lean on straight mouthpieces.
Its double-jointed mouthpiece features a slightly flattened central lozenge, reducing the nutcracker effect and distributing pressure across the tongue and bars. The consistent thickness of the central joint and mouthpiece ends helps prevent uneven surfaces that could cause discomfort. Its mobility encourages relaxation and precise communication through the reins.
Sweet Iron naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture, developing a distinctive taste that encourages chewing and salivation. This material can improve bit acceptance and promote more consistent contact.
The Pelham applies leverage pressure to the poll and chin through the curb chain. Short shanks provide a more direct action, while long shanks increase leverage. The intensity also depends on the curb chain adjustment and whether Pelham roundings or two sets of reins are used.
This bit combines the mobility of a double-jointed mouthpiece with adjustable leverage. Supplied with a curb chain.
Material
Sweet Iron: Sweet Iron is an alloy that naturally oxidises when exposed to moisture in the horse's mouth and air. This oxidation develops a slightly sweet taste that encourages chewing and saliva production. It can therefore promote bit acceptance, relaxation of the mouth and more consistent contact. Oxidation gradually changes the appearance of the mouthpiece, which is a normal characteristic of this material.
