Expert's Opinion: The Mattias olive bit is a sweet iron double bit with a blocked tongue passage. The shape of the mouthpiece provides space for the horse's tongue. For this reason, it is particularly suited to horses with sensitive tongues who might shake their heads with a more traditional bit. The quality of the finish on the sweet iron barrel and the fineness of the break make it particularly comfortable.
The Mattias bit is a double-jointed soft iron bit with a special locking function. The mouthpiece has tongue relief but locks upwards, which can be good for horses with a low palate and sensitive bars who still prefer tongue relief.
The knuckles are further away from the tongue, allowing gentler pressure to be exerted on the tongue. This can be useful for horses that may overreact when you take the reins and need to maintain constant contact with every movement. The sweet taste and stability encourages the horse to seek a stable contact with the bit.
Sweet Iron : Sweet Iron alloy oxidises on contact with moisture in the mouth and air. Oxidation produces a sweet taste that naturally stimulates saliva production. This corresponds to the effect of a sugar given to the horse at the beginning of the session, but allows this sweet taste to be diffused throughout the work. As a result, this alloy ensures good acceptance of the bit and helps the horse to make contact with the mouthpiece. Oxidation changes the appearance of the bit over the course of the sessions.
