Expert opinion : The Abbey Rubber Butterfly Bit is a single jointedbit that offers a soft contact thanks to its alloy. Unlike the double jointed which acts on the tongue, the single jointed acts on the palate and sides of the tongue. It's important to know that the palate of the horse is a sensitive area that should not be neglected. It can be recommended for horses that are relatively easy but not very sensitive to the palate or have a hollow palate. The butterfly bit is particularly suitable for show jumping. It increases the rider's control over the horse, especially in tight curves. The multiple combinations possible depending on the choice of rein placement produce very variable effects:
- Reins on the central ring: the action of the bit is similar to that of a Baucher snaffle. The main action is on the horse's mouth while the pressure on the neck is very light.
- Reins on the bottom ring: the leverage is stronger. Thus the bit is similar to a 3-ring snaffle, but the pressure is distributed equally over the horse's mouth and neck.
- A medium impact is achieved by the use of the rings which are attached to the middle and bottom rings.
In addition, a curb chain can also be used, attached to the upper ring.
Material : Ebonite is a hard material obtained from the vulcanisation of rubber, a process in which rubber is heated to a high temperature to make it harder and smoother. Soft to the touch and with a more stable temperature, this material is more comfortable than metal. This type of rubber requires the horse to salivate naturally with a bit in its mouth so that it does not overheat. Unlike vulcanite, ebonite is a slightly rougher alloy.
Caution : This material is vulnerable and is not guaranteed by the manufacturer against wear and tear due to biting. We strongly advise against using a bit that is too damaged, as this could injure the horse's bars, tongue and palate.
